Established in 1947, the Grimaldi Group is a fully integrated multinational logistics company, specialized in the operation of roll-on/roll-off vessels, car carriers and ferries. It includes seven shipping companies: Grimaldi Deep Sea, which operates in the transport of rolling cargo and containers on the Atlantic routes and between the Mediterranean and West Africa; Grimaldi Euromed, specialized in ro-ro transport in the Euro-Mediterranean area and on the Motorways of the Sea, and in the transport of passengers in the Mediterranean under the Grimaldi Lines brand; Atlantic Container Line, which manages container and ro-ro services between North America and Northern Europe; Malta Motorways of the Sea, a shipping company that operates ro-ro connections between Malta and the main Mediterranean ports; Minoan Lines, operating Greek cabotage services for freight and passengers; Finnlines, which operates in the transport of freight and passengers in the Baltic and North Sea; Trasmed GLE, active in the transport of freight and passengers between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Based in Naples, the Group is wholly owned by the Grimaldi family and employs around 15,000 people worldwide. With a modern fleet of over 130 ships, it serves over 140 ports in more than 50 countries in the Mediterranean area, in Northern Europe, in West Africa, in North and South America. In addition, 25 new, highly efficient ships will join the fleet in the next years; meanwhile, the Group has implemented a strategy aimed at maximizing the transport capacity of the already operational units, so as to achieve economies of scale and scope and, at the same time, maximize the benefits in environmental terms.
As a matter of fact, the main objective of the Group is to strengthen and expand its international logistics network according to a strategy that gives the highest priority to environmental sustainability and to the achievement of high quality standards that fully meet customer expectations. All this is made possible through the application of cutting-edge technologies in every field of its business, and thanks to one of the youngest, most modern and environmentally friendly fleets in the world, while substantial resources are invested in training and innovation.
The Grimaldi Group is today the first Italian shipowner and the first operator in the world for maritime transport of rolling freight; thanks to the quality of its services, the main vehicle manufacturers worldwide keep choosing and awarding the Group. In fact, its dense network of maritime connections guarantees punctual services between the main ports of four continents.
The Grimaldi Group's “flagship” is the extensive network of Motorways of the Sea, which counts over 130 connections in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Baltic Sea and in Northern Europe. With the creation of the Short Sea Network, the Group was a pioneer in implementing a precise EU plan, aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of freight transported by road by promoting sea transport, thus reducing CO2 emissions. With its extensive network of maritime connections, offered under the Grimaldi Lines, Finnlines, Minoan Lines and Trasmed brands in the Mediterranean basin, in the Baltic and North Seas, the Neapolitan Group is the European leader in the Motorways of the Sea. Its shipping services represent a sustainable and efficient alternative to pure road transport: in fact, they avoid road congestion and accidents, delays in delivery and excessive fuel costs, offering at the same time regular, timely deliveries among the most important ports in Europe.
Moreover, over the last years the Group has launched an expansion plan aimed at vertically integrating the logistics services offered according to the door-to-door model. The over 20 port terminals currently owned/managed by the Grimaldi Group are located in 12 countries in Northern Europe, in the Mediterranean basin and in West Africa, and cover a total surface area of over 6 million m2. The Group has also created storage centres equipped for the pre-delivery inspection of vehicles, as well as transport companies in several European and Mediterranean countries.
In addition to the quality and efficiency of its services, the Grimaldi Group stands out for its strong focus on environmental issues, which in recent years has resulted in important investments aimed at reducing harmful emissions. Among other initiatives, the Neapolitan Group is the first Italian shipping company to have signed the SAILS charter. The company has thus undertaken, in addition to its regulatory obligations, to implement specific actions, including the decrease of harmful emissions, the reduction of the underwater noise impact of ships, the optimization of ships energy performance, the fight against invasive species, the protection of cetaceans.
The Grimaldi Group was also among the first shipping companies to choose to install, on board its vessels, exhaust gas cleaning systems and mega lithium batteries capable of powering ships during stops in ports, thus reaching the goal of "zero emissions in port". Furthermore, as a founding member of the Clean Shipping Alliance, the Group is actively committed to supporting the implementation of the new IMO regulations on sulphur emissions.
Thanks to its strong commitment to eco-sustainability, the Grimaldi Group has received several recognitions, including the Lloyd’s List “Excellence in decarbonisation towards 2050” award.
