Truck driver shortage: Where do we stand?

The trucking industry continues to face a chronic shortage of drivers. How did the shortage of drivers evolve in 2024? How do drivers themselves view the profession? And how can transport companies better attract and retain drivers?

IRU, CEVA Logistics and Truckfly by Michelin explored these questions and more during IRU’s annual global driver shortage webinar.

Alternative versus traditional truck powertrains

Which truck powertrain has the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO)? Which one reduces CO₂ emissions the most? And what determines the TCO?

IRU broke down the TCO, as well as CO₂ emissions, for five different types of powertrains – diesel, gas, battery-electric vehicle (BEV), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) – across the five biggest EU road freight countries.
