The Positive Outcome of the Landslide in France on Rail Tunnel

The rail connectivity between France and Italy has faced significant disruption since August 2023, following the closure of the Frejus Railway, the primary line linking the two countries, due to a landslide. However, recent investigations have revealed that the rail tunnel near the site of the landslide (Tunnel de la Brèche) remained unaffected, eliminating the need for rebuilding the structure.

This development is positive as any damage to the tunnel could have substantially prolonged the timeline for a full reopening. Current estimates indicate that the Frejus Railway may resume operations between the end of 2024 and mid-2025. The disaster has had severe repercussions for the rail freight industry, particularly in Italy.
