Financial incentives to promote modal shift

DP World in UK is taking the step of directly encouraging customers to move their imported goods off the road and onto rail. The initiative will charge a flat GBP 10.00 fee (EUR 11.6) on all import-laden containers.

Customers whose container is moved to a railhead more than 225 km from the terminal are reimbursed, and a GBP 70.00 (EUR 81.00) incentive is paid to those whose container is moved to a railhead within 225 km of the terminal.

The programme has the potential to prevent an estimated 30,000 t of carbon dioxide being emitted per year. Read more
