We want to warn members of the potential for significant disruption at the Port of Felixstowe as a result of possible strikes by dock workers.
At the time of writing, the strike will go ahead between 21 and 29 August. As the port handles 40% of containers entering and leaving the UK – around 45,000 a week – it is likely the strike will create disruption to the supply chain of goods, including canned food, clothing and other consumer items.
Overall, the port employs 2,500 people and it is believed that around 1,900 union members will walk out during the strike period. According to the union Unite, there will be a loss of crane drivers, machine operators, and stevedores, which will have an effect on UK supply chains.
Uncertainty
Some reports have claimed that the port would not shut completely during the strike, but it remains to be seen what activity will occur and if operations are viable.
DFDS has told customers of its daily unaccompanied freight service between Sheerness and Calais with an additional benefit of 12 driver accompanied spaces.
Hauliers who are contracted to collect from Felixstowe will have to determine further action as necessary and seek guidance on conditions at the port. Traders will have to liaise with the hauliers to indicate if the freight has arrived or been diverted. It should be noted that even if containers have arrived there may be problems collection it.
