In response to the pressing issue of insufficient safe and secure parking facilities for coach and truck drivers, a new study funded by the European Commission aims to quantify the extent of the problem and provide insights for potential solutions.

The study was initiated following continuous concerns raised by IRU and its members regarding the inadequacy of existing parking options for road transport operators. The goal is to gather feedback directly from professional drivers and transport operators who encounter these challenges daily, in order to assess the current state of infrastructure and pinpoint areas where new facilities are urgently required.

IRU is actively encouraging its members and the wider road transport community to participate in the survey, which is accessible in multiple languages. By leveraging the experiences and recommendations shared by industry practitioners, the initiative aims to inform the development of improved, safer, and more secure parking areas across the EU.

Leading transport companies like DB Schenker, among others, have been instrumental in disseminating the survey to tens of thousands of transport operators, recognizing the critical role that adequate rest areas play in supporting the overall well-being, safety, and operational efficiency of professional drivers on European roads. Furthermore, the lack of suitable parking spaces has been identified as a key factor contributing to the shortage of drivers, particularly those engaged in long-distance journeys.

Through collaborative efforts and data-driven insights generated by this study, the EU seeks to address the challenges faced by coach and truck drivers, enhancing their working conditions, and ultimately, improving the mobility ecosystem within the region.
